Heswall Photographic Society. Who we are and what we do ..

Heswall Photographic Society was founded in 1963 but it took until 1970 to become fully established with a full programme of meetings throughout the season which now runs from September to May with a few practical sessions through the summer.

Our meetings are held at St Peter's Centre, Lower Heswall, CH60 0DZ, most Friday evenings between 8pm and 10pm. The centre has a superb 50+ seat meeting room, modern HD projection and a state of the art Bose sound system. There is a small charge for entry but coffee/tea and biscuits are included.

You will find us a friendly group of around 50 active members,male and female, covering a wide range of ages and skills, but all with a shared interest in photography. We are one of the largest photographic societies on the Wirral.

The club promotes the art and science of photography, mostly through digital photography these days, by

  • arranging talks and presentations by members and external speakers;
  • holding regular internal competitions and workshops;
  • encouraging members to enter external competitions,
  • holding a public exhibition of members' work in the Autumn.
  • encouraging members to apply for photographic distinctions (LRPS, PAGB, etc.)
  • promoting the development of audio-visual (AV) presentations, which are usually done by digital projection.
  • catering for those just starting photography as well as experienced photographers. Photographic advice is freely given.

We try to make our meetings a social event as well as a photographic extravaganza!

Competitions involve the submission of a printed image, or a digital image which can then be projected, in colour or monochrome. Sometimes there will be a set topic. Judging is done a few weeks later, by an external judge, who makes brief comments on the submitted work. Competition entry is entirely voluntary and is anonymous. It is a good way to test your skills and to learn from others.

We occasionally hold workshops, where members can bring their cameras to meetings. These take place more often during the summer sessions.

Post-capture editing of images on a computer is an important part of digital photography and so some of our meetings involve guidance on the more frequently used software such as Photoshop, Photoshop Elements, and Lightroom.

Anyone considering joining the club might like to attend as a Visitor, at £4.00 per attendance. Visitors will find a friendly, welcoming club where members share their common interest - the fascinating and satisfying hobby of photography.
